"I CONFESS..."! Facebook College Confession Pages on the Rise

Even though the distance between people in this age of the Internet and
smartphones might be increasing, it does not take away the need for them to vent,
discuss and confess.
“College confession pages are the newest trend on social networking sites, and there’s nothing more fun than our De Anza College Confessions (DACC) page at  this moment,” said Mira Sanchez, 19, a first year chemistry major.
A recent San Jose Mercury News article reported on how these confession pages are  attracting teenagers, but haunting teachers and counselors, given their controversial nature.
The DACC page seems to be picking up a lot of heat with every passing day. The idea of a college confession page is to have an anonymous forum for the students to post some of their deepest thoughts regarding anything to do with the college.
“My parents think I'm still on course with my schooling at De Anza. What I didn't tell them is that I dropped out 1.5 years ago," says one confession.
Another complains, “To the person who stole my burrito from the Kirsch Center fridge today, I hope you enjoyed starving someone!"

“Although I haven’t ever posted on it, I love the concept. It gives students a feeling of community and a page to voice their opinions. Being students, a lot of times we encounter loneliness and the feeling that nobody understands us. I have seen a lot of emotional support on some people's wall posts,” said Mahnoor Rehman, 21.

The anonymity of the page is what seems to have clicked the most with students.
The one-month old page has 1,900 likes currently, and is only increasing by the hour. Facebook page statistics show that people outside of the country too are reading the posts.

To get the inside story of the page, La Voz editors spoke to the
administrator of the DACC page, the backbone of this community. In spite of all the
praise and admiration he receives for being an impartial, sincere keeper of the
page, he chooses to remain anonymous.

The trend of confession pages has gained much momentum, and not just at De
Anza. Most colleges today have a confession page that is creating its own, new form
social networking on a smaller, more personalized scale. It’s obvious why the trend
has caught up with such craze. After all, who would not like reading something
that begins with something like, “I confess…”?
